There is lots going on this month in Florence park.
Firstly there are a couple of public consultations that you might be interested in commenting on. The link below takes you to the council consultation page for the 'No smoking in play areas '

And secondly to a consultation regarding the locking or not locking of Florence Park at night...

In other news.
We are pleased to let you know that Oxford City Council have agreed to offer free tennis court bookings from 3-5pm, Monday to Friday, at all Oxford parks tennis venues all year-round. This is great news and is intended to encourage children to get on court after school and in the holidays. *Free courts are limited to 1 hour per booker.
There is a new way to get on court!
Over the next few days, in partnership with Oxford City Council, we are installing brand new gates and locks at Bury Knowle Park and Florence Park tennis courts.

2014
In 2014 Florence Park turns 80 years old and to celebrate our lovely estate and beautiful park, there are going to be all sorts of exciting events taking place through out the year. There is a website
http://florencepark80th.weebly.com/
Friends of Florence Park will be involved in the Party. We had a great time putting on last years fête. So on June 21st 2014 we are going all out to create an old school vintage 1930s(ish) village fête with a lovely tea tent, music on the bandstand, Jitterbug dancers to watch, old school games such as croquet and quoits, a cake competition (30s recipies only!), music for the kids, games and crafts, loads of food, punch and Judy......and lots more to be confirmed.
All this will be in conjunction with loads more music and entertainment on the other side of the park too.

September 2013
This Month we have been discussing raising funding for play equipment for older children to replace the old play park when that is eventually removed.
We have been asking if anyone's children have had any accidents in the new play park, most especially the large slide which seems to have caused a number of broken bones in the short time it's been open. we are trying to get the council to take a closer look at the design of this piece and to take our concerns seriously!!!
This month saw the departure of our park gardener, Keith, who left to start work at Cutteslow park. He will be sadly missed as we have all grown to regard him as a great asset and a friend over the past 2 and half years.
Please welcome our new park gardener Ian
We are hoping to organise an woodland craft fun day in the bowling pavilion over the half term break, any volunteers or ideas very very welcome.
August 2013
On the 4th August we held our very first Friends of Florence Park Fete, and for first timers we think it went pretty well.
We had two great live bands - Trinity Blue and Band of Hope, we had loads of kids singing along with Danielle from the Little Music School. Donnington Doorstep came down and were joined by Florence Park football Club, and Flo Park community Centre.
The Friends of Florence Park craft tent managed to create about 70 hats and 35 streamers in 3 hours and the Oxford Playhouse Play Tent were just brilliant. The weather held out, Amelia managed to tame the constant tide of children who were desperate to get on the bouncy castle (must get two next year!) and we sold so much cake and tea we managed to raise £780!
We have a list as long as our arm for things we want do for the park, so we will let you know our plans for the money raised - any ideas email us and we will add them to the list.
Thank you so much for coming and eating cake, drinking tea and generally just hanging out, you all made it a very relaxed and enjoyable fete - see you next year

Monday 22.04.13 FofFP Meeting
News
Our Red nose day grant application was successful! We have been awarded a sum of money for the photo competition exhibition and celebration and for the purchase of a marquee and furniture to make our events in the park more accessible to, and inclusive of, a wider audience (the elderly and very young).
Photo Comp celebration/exhibition
We are spreading the word at the moment to find musicians to play at the band stand as part of the celebration, need only play for 20mins or so..?! Please contact us if you wish to be involved or have suggestions.
There will be a Tea tent (marquee) by the band stand. Teas and coffee and cakes will be sold to raise funds for the group.
The event will run during the afternoon on a date in June to be decided.
A photo taking and advice session in the park will be held between 10am and noon on Saturday 18th May from the band stand.
Spring Bulbs for 2014
We have chosen some types of bulbs and these will be ordered by the council in the next month for the ‘friends’ groups to help plant.
Keith (the gardener) is interested in any suggestions of where people would like them planted.
Notice will be given of when the planting will take place, everyone is invited to join in.
Old Play Park
The council will, over the coming weeks, have the old play equipment and fencing removed. It is becoming unfit for use and was always to be removed and not replaced once the new parks had been built.
The large rope climbing pyramid will remain.
Suggestions of Further Events for this year
Parks Week will definitely be celebrated. Hopefully with a picnic, kids sports events, stalls, dog show? Any suggestions and offers of help welcome!
Art /Painting day. A day or morning of watercolour painting to be arranged in the park. A couple of Instructors would be good to find!
Market Street. Holding a market along the avenue of large trees on one Sat or Sunday during the summer. Stalls to be rented by food and craft marketers to help raise funds for the group.
Outdoor Theater. outside cinema (date and details to follow)
Wild life and bird boxes. Funding will be sourced for the planting of a natural habitat of flowers and plants along the banks of the stream and for the purchase of bird box kits which can be assembled by the local children and then placed in trees throughout the park. Any offers of help to achieve this aim would be much appreciated.

Sunday 14.04.13 Treasure Hunt
The weather was finally good to us and we were able to really enjoy the day!
Plenty of families came down to the band stand and started out on the treasure hunt around the park, collecting their crafting materials and meeting back to create their crowns and eat some well deserved cake!
No one got eaten by the troll on the way round!
Many thanks to everyone who came down to help us and to join in the fun.
Check out the photo's in the gallery and on our face book page.
Keep checking back for upcoming events and maybe another hunt later in the year!

Meeting 05.03.13
We had a very fruitful meeting, thank you to those who came along. The following subjects were discussed.
Tennis Courts
Ours will be the first park courts to be cleaned and have the fencing replaced, work will start on this from 11th March for aprox 3 weeks!! They will attempt to keep at least two courts open to the public at all times.
This is very exciting!!
As a group we are looking in to getting grants for, and organising, tennis lessons for local children and women (maybe combining the two with a kids and mum session).
Photo Competition
We are launching a photo competition for under 11's!
The theme is 'your park' (see dedicated competition page for further details)
This will run until the end of May after which we will have an exhibition and prize giving, maybe to be combined with bands at the band stand in the park and deck chair tea party; keep checking website for developments!
Easter Treasure Hunt
During the second week of the Easter school holidays we will be having a kids treasure hunt through the park.
Any kids are welcome for a forage through the trees and bushes to find the 'treasure' which will help them make a Hat or Crown at the finish. There will most probably be cakes fort the returning explorers as well!!!
Community Orchard
The Community Orchard group had approached the council about the possibility of planting fruit trees in the park, at present this has been refused. However if you want to show interest in having a community fruit tree in your garden please contact them at [email protected]
Litter Sweep
The next date for this will be Saturday 13th May 2013
New Ideas
Suggestions for up and coming events included :
designing an anniversary logo for the park to go on bags and T shirts,
celebrating 'parks week' or the 'big lunch in July/August,
doing website 'Profiles' of people and familiar faces who use the park
If you would like to make any comments or suggestions on anything discussed or to offer your help or input in any way you feel able please fill in a suggestion form.
Many thanks
